According to a recent report from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour (MOL), falls are the leading cause of construction site injuries and deaths in the province. MOL representatives have been conducting regular “blitz” inspections to determine specific fall hazards of various workplaces.

After visiting over 1,600 sites last July and August, MOL inspectors issued 584 stop work orders for instances of non-compliance with Regulation 851 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA).

Regulation 851 pertains to machine guarding, which is a common safety feature of industrial equipment. Most of the violations issued involved failure to provide suitable guardrails or other forms of fall protection. The Ministry of Labour requires elevator car tops with a gap exceeding 12 inches to have safety guardrails.
